According to legend, it is believed that the Pancha Paandavas of Mahabharatham installed 5 Sivalingams at this Sthalam and worshipped God Shiva afer they escaped from the poison pond (Natchupoigai). As such, there are 5 shrines for Lord Shiva. The main deity isknown as Neelakandeswarar. The other 4 shrines are for 1. Padikkarai Nayagar, 2. Muktheesar, 3. Paramesar and 4. Magadeesar. Lord Brahma is also believed to have worshipped Shiva here.
