According to the legend, God Shiva once cursed Parvati to become a cow and live on the earth due to indifference shown by her towards him. With her son Murugan as a calf, Parvati worshipped Shiva at this Sthalam and got relieved of the curse. Devendiran, the king of Devaas and Kamadhenu are said to have worshipped the God Shiva here.
The temple with a 7 tier Gopuram (Tower) houses the shrines for Sattanathar, Natarajar and Dakshinamurthy. The female deity’s shrine faces north. Inside the temple, there is also a shrine for Adhikesava Perumal. The Navagraha images are kept in a straight line unlike in other temples where they are kept in a 3 x 3 matrix.
